A taste of winter

Nights can get pretty cold in northern Michigan. But they have a special beauty.

Glen Haven tracks of winter

Wooden rails used long ago to move lifesaving boats between a boathouse and the Lake Michigan beach rest quietly under a blanket of snow at the former Coast Guard station near Glen Haven. The station now is part of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Winter’s twilight can present gentle scenes of beauty. Driving home from work one evening, the delicate curve of this sweeping branch caught my eye. The flat background is the ice and snow covered surface of Devil’s Elbow, part of a small lake.
