Leland’s Fishtown historic district still floats in winter. A fishing tug is tied up to the south dock near the mouth of the river. Lake Michigan lurks off the boat’s bow. Leland just last week announced it will purchase a dredge so it can reopen the harbor this spring. Sand has been drifting in, and federal funding that previously helped pay for dredging dried up. The harbormaster said a midwinter storm brought in enough sand to close the harbor. Dredging should reopen it this spring and allow ferries to run to the Manitou Islands in 2017.
